SC dismisses plea for contempt action against lawyers

The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea seeking contempt action against some apex court lawyers for writing to the vice president on the alleged suicide of former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Kalikho Pul.
A bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and U U Lalit said "contempt proceedings is our jurisdiction and no one should tell against whom the contempt action should be taken".
"The plea is dismissed," the bench said adding that it does not see any reason to entertain the plea as the petitioners do not have locus standi in the matter.
Advocate M L Sharma who filed the plea said that two lawyers have forged the documents with regard to Pul's suicide and hence contempt action should be initiated against them.

The apex court had on March 3 refused to grant an urgent hearing on Sharma's PIL seeking independent probe into the alleged suicide of Pul.
He had sought urgent hearing of the plea saying "a criminal conspiracy" was on to defame the highest judiciary of the country.

The plea also sought investigation into the role of lawyers who were allegedly espousing the cause of Pul's wife Dangwimsai Pul.
On February 23, Pul's wife had withdrawn her letter for CBI or NIA probe into the allegations levelled in her husband's purported suicide note against some former and serving persons holding constitutional posts and politicians.

Pul had committed suicide on August 9 last year. His body was found hanging in the official residence of the Chief Minister at Itanagar.
After months of intense political developments, Pul had taken over the reins of Arunachal Pradesh on February 19, 2016 for a brief period but had to relinquish the job following a Supreme Court order in July, last year.
