Various scholars from India and Nepal on Thursday called for the preservation and promotion of Sanskrit language and literature for their common benefit and establishing a study centre for the language with a joint governing board.

The scholars, who took part in a three-day-long International Sanskrit Conference that concluded on Thursday, called for the set up of Indo-Nepal Centre for Sanskrit Studies with a joint governing board with necessary facilities in Kathmandu.

Titled "Sanskrit a common treasure of Nepal and India", the conference was jointly organised by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, India's Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Balmiki campus of Nepal Sanskrit University.

More than 45 working papers on different aspects of Sanskrit language, literature and philosophy were presented by the scholars during the conference, according to an official statement.

During the conference India was also urged to provide scholarships through its embassy in Kathmandu to Nepalese students for higher studies in yoga and Ayurveda, noted the declaration.
