With mercury remaining above the 40 degrees Celsius mark at most of locations, the MeT department predicted that the maximum temperature would further rise by two to three degrees during this week.
Hisar was the hottest place in both states with a maximum of 44 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal, the MeT department said here today.
Among other places in Haryana, Ambala, Narnaul and Bhiwani had maximum of 41.5, 40 deg and 42.2 degrees respectively. Karnal sizzled at 42.4 degrees Celsius, two notches above normal.
The Union Territory of Chandigarh had a high of 41.6 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.
Weather will remain dry in Punjab and Haryana in the next 24 hours, the MeT department said.
