In view of the piles of rotting garbage spotted outside roadside eateries, stalls selling fast food items, vendors and hawkers selling different other items like vegetables, fruits and snacks, the municipal corporation has stuck upon the idea of providing free 10,000 dustbins to encourage cleanliness, said a senior South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) official.
The aim is to maintain sanitation and hygiene conditions at public places. The purpose is also to deal with disposal of leftovers and paper and plastic waste from roadside eateries and stalls on the roadsides due to non availability of dustbins, he said.
The lab test are expected to take a fortnight after which the dustbins will be sent to the Licensing department which will distribute them to the hawkers and street vendors, SDMC's Executive Engineer Ajay Gautam said.
