The guard identified as Nirdesh Singh was posted outside the residence of Akali MLA Manpreet Singh Iyali at his village Iyali on the outskirts of the city.
Nirdesh along with constable Surjit Singh was posted on security duty outside the residence of the MLA.
The incident took place when Surjit Singh was cleaning his pistol. All of a sudden a bullet was fired from the pistol which hit Nirdesh from close range, police said, adding that he was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
However, ADCP Bhupinder Singh said that Surjit has been taken into the custody for investigation.
