Noted environmental activist Balbir Singh Seechewal said today Punjab's Seechewal model of cleaning river will be adopted by more than 1,600 villages around Ganga for its rejuvenation.
"Our Seechewal model of cleaning water will be adopted by as many as 1,657 villages around Ganga river for rejuvenation," Seechewal said.
He was talking to media on the sidelines of 'Challenges and Strategies for Management of Water in Rural Areas', organised by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
He said Sarpanches of different villages located near Ganga had even seen Seechewal model for cleaning water and they were impressed by it.
These villages are located in Uttarakhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Jharkhand from where Ganga flows through.
Seechewal said that Union Minister Uma Bharti had met him last year and had said that the model used for Kali Bein will be replicated for cleaning Ganga.
Seechewal, who spearheaded the campaign to clean the Kali Bein with the help of local people said under Seechewal model, the sewage water passes through different wells for removing impurity in the water and then it is shifted to pond for irrigating crops.
"This model is very simple and we have found that water with TDS (Total dissolved solids) of up to 2,000 can be used for irrigation," he said.
Seechewal has been credited for rejuvenation of 160 km long Kali Bein, a rivulet of Beas river in Punjab. It originates near village Dhanoa in Hoshiarpur and traverses the plants of Doaba region to join the confluence of Satluj and Beas rivers near Harike wetland.
