The 30-share BSE index hit 33,883.48 at 1206 hours, having touched a record high earlier -- a modest gain of 46.74 points, or 0.14 per cent.
For the 50-share Nifty, the reading was 10,480.15, up 16.95 points, or 0.16 per cent.
Buying interest was seen in realty, auto and industrials.
The movers on the positive side included Hero MotoCorp 2.05 per cent and ONGC 1.84 per cent.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) net sold shares worth Rs 407.83 crore yesterday. But domestic institutional investors (DIIs) lapped up equities to the tune of Rs 357.40 crore.
US stocks ended with modest losses yesterday, pulling back from all-time highs.
