Seven people were today charged with the murder of a Pakistani-origin woman and her three children in an arson attack in Leicester last month.
Kemo Porter, 18, Nathaniel Mullings, Jackson Powell, Aaron Webb, all 19, Akeem Jeffers, 21, Shaun Carter, 24, and a 16-year-old, who cannot be named, were remanded in to custody.
All seven defendants spoke only to confirm their names during the hearing that lasted four minutes. They were ordered to reappear at Leicester Crown Court on January 27, the BBC reported.
The seven are each charged with the murders of Shehnila Taufiq, 47, her daughter Zainab, 19, and sons Bilal, 17, and Jamil, 15.
They died when flames engulfed their home in Wood Hill, Leicester, in the early hours of September 13.
The court heard a trial in the case is likely to last for at least eight weeks.
Detectives have been examining possible links between the suspected arson attack and the fatal stabbing of youth football coach Antoin Akpom in Leicester on September 12.
Shehnila Taufiq's husband, Muhammad Taufiq al-Sattar, who works as a neurosurgeon in Ireland, had expressed hope that he would get justice after his entire family was wiped out in the arson attack.
"I deeply miss my beautiful wife and three beautiful children. What has happened has happened, and nothing can be reversed, but I hope justice prevails and, in future, this should not happen to any family in the UK," he had said last month.
