Several DYFI and SFI activists were detained here today for trying to break a police cordon during their march to Raj Bhavan to protest against alleged irregularities in primary teachers recruitment.
The police also resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd, which had clogged the busy Esplande crossing.
"Some of them were detained after they forcibly tried to break the police cordon. We had initially appealed to them not to cross the barricade but they tried to use force. So we had to detain some of them," a Kolkata police official said.
Students Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the student and the youth wings of CPI(M) had organized a march to Raj Bhavan to protest against the alleged irregularities in primary teachers recruitment.
DYFI state secretary Sayandip Mitra was among those detained.
