Sharif inaugurates first-ever solar energy project in Pak

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today inaugurated Pakistan's first-ever solar energy project built with Chinese assistance, a step forward to provide relief to people in the country plagued by perpetual power shortages.
Sharif inaugurated the 100 megawatt (MW) unit of Quaid-e -Azam Solar Park in Bhawalpur district of Punjab province.
"We want to end the energy crisis in the country which was faced due to inefficiency of various governments," he said, adding his government was committed to end "darkness".
Sharif said that on final completion, the solar park will produce 900 MW energy.
He said over 10,500 MW energy will be added to the national grid by 2018 which would be surplus for Pakistan.

Radio Pakistan reported that Rs 15 billion solar plant is spread over 500 acres and the first unit has been completed in about 11 months. The Chinese government has borne the expenses for setting up the plant.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was also present at the inauguration ceremony and the project was inducted into the national transmission grid.
Pakistan faces about 5,000 MW energy shortages and the government has launched several projects to bridge the gap.
Sharif said that his government was committed to end the energy crisis and the menace of militancy in the country.
