Giving a literary touch to the Durga Puja festival, two pandals in association with the British Council will screen short films based on Shakespeare's plays.
The British Council has tied up with Ahiritola Sarbojanin Durgotsab in north Kolkata and Ballygunge Cultural Durgotsab Samity in the southern parts of the city where 37 short films based on the bard's plays will be screened.
"The British Council is launching these films during this time of the year because the Puja in Kolkata is truly a large outdoor art festival, where entire neighbourhoods and people of all faiths celebrate in style and on a scale, competing for the audience's admiration," a British Council official said.
"By partnering with these two very noted Durga Puja organisations, we are also connecting the cultures of north and south Kolkata through a shared appreciation of Shakespeare, who is perhaps as much an icon of Bengali literature as Rabindranath Tagore," British Council's India Director Alan Gemmell said.
As part of the 'Globe Theatre's Complete Walk' initiative, these films have been screened along the iconic 2.5 mile stretch between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge in London.
The Globe Theatre's Complete Walk is an interactive way to celebrate William Shakespeare's life, work and legacy and is part of the British Council's global programme 'Shakespeare Lives', which celebrates the bard's work on the 400th anniversary of his death this year.
