Shree Uttam Steel and Power has received environmental clearance for its Rs 13,196-crore expansion project in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra.
The company has proposed raising production capacity of its integrated steel plant to 3 mtpa from 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and captive power plant capacity to 3x50 mw from 2x50 mw in the existing area in Sindhudurg.
"Based on the recommendations of the expert appraisal committee (EAC), the environment ministry has given the environment clearance to Shree Uttam Steel Power's expansion project," a senior government official said.
The cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 13,196.28 crore. The approval has been given subject to certain conditions, the official added.
Among conditions specified, the company has been asked to install 24x7 air monitoring devices to monitor air emission as provided by the Central Pollution Control Board.
It has been asked to control gaseous emission levels from all sources, recycle/reuse coal and coke fines as well as develop green belt in 33 per cent of the project area.
It may be noted that the company had plans for expansion in 2010, but could not proceed due to imposition of moratorium on consideration of projects in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. The moratorium, however, was lifted in 2014.
