World championship bronze medallist shuttler P V Sindhu has pulled out of the USD 600,000 Korea Open Super Series, scheduled to be get underway in Seoul on January 7 next year.
After Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap decided to skip the season-opening tournament because of health issues, Sindhu, too, will now miss the event to give herself more time to prepare for Malaysia Super Series and India Open GP Gold.
Down with fever and chest congestion, Saina was the first to withdraw from Korea Open, while Kashyap withdrew his entry yesterday due to a shoulder injury.
"She won't get time to prepare for the Korea Open as it is starting in the first week. After playing in the Nationals she will get back to training and play in Malaysia and Lucknow," Sindhu's father Ramana told PTI.
"Her coach Pullela Gopichand decided that it is best for the shuttler as she will get more time to prepare, so she pulled out," he added.
Sindhu, who won two tournaments in 2013, is currently playing in Senior Nationals and will be playing the Malaysia Open (January 14-19) and Syed Modi tournament in Lucknow (January 21-26).
The lanky shuttler had won the Macao Open earlier this month after skipping a couple of Super Series events in October and November.
The rising stature of Sindhu has also brought global sports equipment giants Adidas, Yonex and China's Li Ning to her doors as they are fighting to get the Indian sensation to endorse their product.
"There are a few offers and we will decide in due time. She has a contract with Yonex till January 31, so there is time to take a proper decision," Ramana, a former volleyball international, said.
