Singapore honours Indian librarian for contribution to field

Singapore has honoured Indian origin librarian, Rasu Ramachandran, for his contributions to the development of the library profession over the past four decades.
70-year-old Ramachandran received Lifetime Contribution Award from Singapore President Tony Tan at a ceremony yesterday.
Ramachandran, who joined the library in 1969, has helped draft the National Library Board (NLB) Act in 1995 which established the library with more flexibility and freedom to expand.
"I am very privileged to have been part of this movement to make libraries part and parcel of everyday life of Singaporeans," said Ramachandran.
The veteran librarian served as a deputy chief executive officer of NLB for four years (2000-04), and as the secretary-general of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) for a year.

The awards were given as part of Singapore hosting the 79th IFLA World Library and Information Congress.
More than 3,500 delegates from 120 countries are participating in the congress being held from Aug 17-23.
