The gang was active for past six months in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana and have duped 24 persons, SSP Subhash Singh Baghel said.
13 ATM cards, one laptop, cheque books and pass books of eight banks, 14 SIM cards, one CPU, one TFT monitor and colour printer has been recovered from their possession, he said.
The arrested persons have been identified as Pintu alias Deepak, Naresh, Ajaypal, Sonu, Sanjay, and Vijay, all residents of Meerut, while their two Bihar-based associates Deepak and Sanjay are at large, he said.
On receiving a SMS, they used to convince the participants into making a cash deposit of Rs 2,000 and then Rs 15,000 towards registration charges to get a winning amount of Rs 1 lakh.
Upon receiving the amount, they used to severe all contacts, he said.
They also duped people on the pretext of erecting mobile tower on their terraces, the SSP said.
