Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today reviewed the status of 271 operational night shelters in the city as the state set up six family shelters.
"The winter will last another 3 weeks. Let us continue with our help during this period," Jung said and appealed the citizens to continue assisting the administration.
In the last review meeting, Jung had asked the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to increase the number of family shelters, following which six more family shelters have been put up.
"DUSIB CEO apprised that as per the directions of the Lt Governor issued on January 5, DUSIB has set up family night shelters, with a capacity of 40 persons each, at six more locations," an official release said.
The shelters have come up near Karkardooma Court, Madhubhan Chowk at Rohini, near Nizamuddin flyover and Mayapuri flyover, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya hospital and Japanese Park, Rohini.
DUSIB CEO also informed that the existing night shelters have the capacity to accommodate 19,000 people and that it has also set up temporary shelters including under flyovers as many people were unwilling to move into night shelters.
Meanwhile, DUSIB is enrolling student volunteers to assist them in their operations who will later be issued a certificate at the end of their apprenticeship, a release said.
The three best case-studies submitted by college and university student volunteers will also be awarded by DUSIB.
During the meeting the Lt Governor also directed the Finance Secretary to make a roster of officers of the Deputy Secretary level to inspect the night shelters from 10 PM till 1 AM every day.
The review meeting, held at Raj Niwas, was attended by top officials including the Principal Secretary (Finance), Divisional Commissioner, Secretary (UD), Secretary (PWD), Secretary (Health), CEO (DJB), and DUSIB CEO among others.
