Six persons killed in road accidents on Holi

Six persons were killed in five fatal road accidents in the city on the day of Holi, the lowest since 2007, even as police prosecuted over 13,000 revellers for traffic violations, including 1,447 for drunken driving.
"The presence of policemen at strategic locations and strict traffic enforcement resulted in the lowest fatal accidents in the city on the day of Holi till now," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.
According to police, five fatal accidents were reported from all over the city in which 6 persons lost their lives.
This was against 14 fatal accidents that took place on the day of Holi in the year 2013, 13 in 2012, 11 in 2011 and 15 in the year 2010. The largest number of casualties on Holi was in the year 2006 when there were 20 fatal accidents in which 22 people were killed.

"About 200 teams of Traffic police officials were stationed at different locations in the city to take action against drunken driving, over speeding, riding without helmet, performing stunts on two-wheelers and other traffic offences," said Shukla.
Joint checking against drunken driving was undertaken by Delhi Traffic Police, PCR and local staff of respective police stations.
Total 13,015 prosecutions were made by Traffic Police yesterday which included 2090 for drunken driving (including 643 prosecutions of registered vehicle owners who allowed their vehicles to be driven by unauthorized persons/drunk drivers).
A total of 881 vehicles were impounded during the drive. In addition, 1544 persons were prosecuted for red light jumping, 385 for improper parking, 139 for dangerous driving, 249 for over speeding, 1464 for triple riding, 5633 for riding without helmet, 780 for not using seat belt, 210 for one-way violations and 25 for not having valid driving licence, police said.
