Six task forces formed to address Delhi's traffic problems

Following Lt Governor Anil Baijal's order, six special task forces have been formed comprising officials from different agencies - traffic police, PWD, Transport department, DTC, DDA and civic bodies - for intelligent traffic management system in the national capital.
Each task force, to be headed by DCP (traffic) in every six police district range, will submit its report within one month.
This is the first time that joint task forces of various agencies have been formed to address city's traffic problems . Earlier, multiple agencies worked separately on the issue.
According to an order issued by Special Transport Commissioner K K Dahiya on the direction of the LG, all six task forces will identify bottlenecks causing traffic jams on major roads in their jurisdiction.

Besides, they will also suggest short term as well as medium and long term solutions for smooth flow of traffic.
The terms of reference for the task force includes identifying the task to be taken up by each agency and also to prepare a time frame for completion of the task in consultation with the executing agency.

They will also identify the intersections where traffic signalling light system should be installed urgently.
Last week, the Lt Governor had held a high-level meeting with various agencies directing to form task force for intelligent traffic management system in the capital and also emphasised on new uniform parking policy.

A senior government official said that task forces will also identify stretches of road where unauthorised /illegal parking is rampant; resulting in hindrance in smooth flow of traffic and to suggest remedial measures.
"Teams will identify authorised parking lots which are not properly managed by the contractors thereby requiring suitable action by Municipal Corporations.
"It will also flag bus queue shelters (BQS)which require shifting to avoid congestion and also to suggest nearest alternative places for shifting of BQS," the official also said.
Apart from this, task forces will identify U-turns under flyovers where encroachments are noted.
