An assistant professor of SGPGI, Lucknow, has been invited by the Rashtrapati Bhavan to exhibit his innovation - a smartphone-connected laryngoscope that allows surgeons to see on phone screens whether the tube to administer oxygen has been placed at the right spot or not.
Ashish Kumar Kannaujia, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, took five years to develop the prototype from design.
Laryngoscope are bulky equipments weighing 10-20 kg with their own monitors which are used by anesthesiologists to see if they have been able to correctly place endotracheal tube in the windpipe in a sedated patient undergoing surgery or being cured for heart attack.
Once the endotracheal tube, put in windpipe through mouth to ensure the adequate exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, is rightly placed, laryngoscope is removed.
Kannaujia's innovation brought drastic changes in laryngoscope by connecting it to smartphone or a tablet - through bluetooth or wired connection - as it managed to reduce the weight associated with factory fitted monitors, increase its mobility and enables its use for tele medicine as the visuals can be broadcast live using cellphone signals.
"It can also be connected to personal electronic devices like personnel computer, laptop, tablet, smartphones, MP4 devices etc. These devices can also be connected to internet to give live images and videos to the experts and get expert opinion," Kannaujia told PTI over phone.
He said it can be very use full in ambulances where it can be attached to patients and patient can be monitored in real time by connecting it through internet by an expert and can give instruction.
A total of 65 grassroots innovations will be part of this Exhibition which will kick-off the week-long Festival of Innovations in Rashtrapati Bhavan from March 12-19, 2016.
The Festival is being organised by Rashtrapati Bhavan in collaboration with the National Innovation Foundation.
President Pranab Mukherjee has extended support to the innovation movement in the country ever since assumption of office, especially by encouraging setting up of innovation clubs in all institutions of higher learning and introducing annual residency programmes for grassroots innovators in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
