Social audit prog for MNREGA to be extended to other schemes

The Centre's social audit programme for the ambitious MNREGA will be extended to all other schemes of the Rural Development Ministry to ensure transparency and accountability.
A top Rural Development Ministry official said the Ministry is in the process of giving a structure to social audit and make it an independent scheme so that any other ministry who wants to do social audit to improve the delivery efficiency of programme will be able to do so.
"Ministry of Rural Development is working out a scheme to make social audit a generic scheme rather than component under MNREGA," the official said.

If it is implemented, the Rural Development Ministry programmes including MNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna, Indira Awaas Yojana and National Social Assistance Programmes will be subjected to social audit.
In 2011, the Ministry had issued rules and regulations for the social audit of MNREGA.
The rules of rural job scheme were framed in consultation with the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
