A cyber committee constituted by the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, to curb defamatory and obscene remarks on social media against women, will submit its report within three months, a senior official said today.

Vijaya Rahatkar, chairperson of the commission told reporters the eight-member committee, headed by the Director General of Information and Public Relations (DGIPR) Brijesh Singh, would submit its report in three months.

She informed that the committee had its first meeting on May 8 in her presence.

The commission had received several complaints about humiliating remarks made on social media platforms against women following which the committee, comprising experts from various fields, was constituted, she informed.

"Concrete steps have been taken in this regard and an eight member committee has been constituted. It is headed by DGIPR Brijesh Singh," she said.

She said that the commission, after studying the cyber committee's report, would make recommendations on the issue to the state government.

The chairperson informed that a "Suhita helpline' was started two months ago to help women lodge complaints directly with the commission.

"More than 1,200 complaints has been filed by women from various regions of the state and all the complainants were provided help," she said.
