Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit today said that solar energy was considered to be the best option for meeting energy requirements of modern day life as it belongs to the renewable category.
"With the disappearance of fossil fuels from the planet and their rising costs has forced countries to switch over to a sustainable energy source," the Governor said after inaugurating a 30-KW grid interactive solar power plant under Renewable Energy Project at Raj Bhawan here.
Solar energy is the only alternative energy as Sun is the biggest energy supplier and is fully capable of meeting the energy needs of earth in the distant future, he said.
Purohit also asked officials to look into the possibility of providing LED-based solar lantern in the streets where there is no access to power.
The renewable energy project at the Raj Bhawan was sanctioned to Assam Energy Development Agency (AEDA) Guwahati by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Government of India under Special Area Demonstration Project Scheme.
Different renewable energy systems have been installed and commissioned at Raj BhaWan Assam complex like 30 KWp Grid interactive solar PV power plant, solar water heating systems, 6 KWp Solar Wind hybrid Aero Generator and LED Garden Lights and LED Street Light under the Project.
The objective of the scheme was demonstration of application of various renewable energy systems in a project mode with 100 per cent funding from the Ministry to create greater awareness of renewable sources of energy and to supplement the energy requirement.
Assam Minister of Science and Technology Keshab Mahanta who was also present on the occasion said that AEDA would launch a programme for Roof Top Solar Project to harness the abundant power of the sun.
