The accused was arrested yesterday, three days after the incident.
"The body of the woman was found at her home on the morning of October 6. Preliminary investigation and the crime scene had suggested that someone attempted to rape or had raped the victim before killing her," Kailaras police station in charge Naveen Yadav said.
The officer said the woman's body bore injury marks, suggesting that she was beaten up for resisting her attacker.
"The man has admitted to have committed the crime during his interrogation," the officer said.
On the day of the incident, the heavily drunk man went to his mother's room and tried to force himself on her, Yadav said, adding that the man had thrashed his mother and killed her with a stone.
He said the accused then slept off in the same room after committing the crime.
Police have recovered the blood-soaked clothes and the stone used by the accused in the crime.
