Remembering Salam's contribution, Gandhi said that in his death, Manipur has lost an outstanding leader and representative of the state.
"Saddened by the demise of Haji Abdul Salam. A veteran Congressman & committed social worker, he served the people of Manipur with dedication," Rahul tweeted.
Salam passed away in Imphal last night following a brief illness, family members said. He was 69.
Salam was the first Manipuri Muslim to be a member of the House of States from Manipur. He had been representing the state in the Upper House since 2014.
Remembering him as a "literary genius", Sonia said, "Taarakbhai, through his writings, took Gujarati literature to new heights. He championed human values of peace, happiness and social harmony.
