A parliamentary delegation from South Korea headed by Speaker of its National Assembly Chung Sye-kyun met Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu in Parliament House today.
Naidu said that recent years have seen enhanced contacts between the parliamentary institutions of India and South Korea and the present visit would add further momentum in this direction. He congratulated South Korea for successfully hosting the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February this year, a statement from the Rajya Sabha Secretariat said.
Stressing the importance of civilisational linkages and deep people-to-people bonds in strengthening bilateral relations, Naidu said that the growing ties between the two countries is reflected in the elevation of the relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership in 2015, the statement read.
"Driven by commonality of interests and values, our bilateral relations have increasing strategic dimensions. India sees Korea as a natural partner for mutually beneficial development," he said, adding that India was keen to create a broad-based strategic partnership with Korea to harness the potential of bilateral relations.
Naidu also appreciated the effort of President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue through dialogue and engagement with North Korea.
"India supports peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and diplomacy and expressed the hope that the momentum generated by the inter-Korean talks would contribute to this end," he said.
The visiting delegation also underlined the growing economic relations between the two countries and hoped that the relations could be expanded further in other areas including defence and culture.
