Union minister and senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu today accused the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh of being family-centric and termed its alliance with the Congress as "immoral" and "opportunistic".
"The Akhilesh Yadav government has been an all-round failure. The SP was voted to power five years ago with a huge majority but its family-centric style of functioning frittered away the opportunity to serve the people. Today the voters feel cheated," he said.
"Realising that it has lost the trust of the people, which would be reflected in the results of the ongoing assembly polls in the state, the SP has now forged an alliance with the Congress. This immoral and opportunistic alliance will, however, not succeed in hoodwinking the people," the minister said.
Naidu was addressing a public meeting at Jhalwa on the outskirts of the city in support of party national secretary Siddharth Nath Sin, who is contesting from Allahabad (West) assembly seat.
Defending the Narendra Modi government's note ban move, he claimed "demonetisation has hit the black economy hard and broken the financial backbone of those indulging in any type of unlawful activity".
"The BJP believes in doing politics, not seeking votes in the name of caste or religion. It is for this very reason that Prime Minister Modi's bold step has been supported by the people despite a malicious propaganda by opposition parties," he said.
