A special court held at Tihar jail complex today disposed off 13 cases of petty offenders and ordered the release of one under trial, jail officials said.
The court, presided by Sachin Sangwan, Metropolitan Magistrate, Tis Hazari Court, took up the cases of 21 under- trials who had confessed to their crime and disposed off 13, sent seven cases back to regular court and ordered the release of one prisoner, Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta said in a statement.
"One special court was held in Tihar court complex to dispose off cases of petty offenders languishing in jail. The court took up the cases of 21 confessing prisoners, out of which 13 cases were disposed off, seven cases were sent back to the regular court and one prisoner had already been released," the statement said.
In order to eliminate habitual offenders, the petty offenders were screened by the finger print bureau of Delhi Police.
This was the 149th court in succession and till date 5,422 cases of petty offenders have been decided by these special courts organised at Tihar Court Complex, Gupta said.
On the directions of the then Chief Justice of India A S Anand, special courts are being held on a regular basis in the Tihar Jail premises to dispose off petty cases of the undertrials who are willing to confess their crime.
The courts were proving very useful for the prisoners as they have the opportunity to get settled their cases at an early date rather than waiting for years before regular courts.
