Senior minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told Parliament that the government was for amending the 13th amendment in line with the current needs.
"This was why the government has proposed the setting up of a parliamentary select committee to discuss with all parties to formulate and recommend political and constitutional changes necessary," de Silva said.
Silva was responding to a query from main opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who probed the government's view on calls to abolish the amendment by government's nationalist allies, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, National Freedom Front and Heritage Party JHU.
The 13 th amendment moved in 1987 was as a result of Indian intervention in Sri Lanka.
The Indo-Lanka accord triggered the amendment resulting in the creation of devolved units of provincial councils.
