In a novel move, a senior police officer here roamed the city streets impersonating a robber in an attempt to review the alertness of city police who failed to take any action against him.
Following the incident, eight policemen have been sent to 'line hazir' whereas Station Officers of six police stations have been issued a warning, Senior Superintendent of Police Shalab Mathur said today.
Last night, to review the preparedness of the police, the SSP made a call to the control room saying that two bike- borne persons looted Rs 50,000 at VIP road.
He also gave a description of the miscreants, saying that the driver was wearing a black helmet while the pillion rider was dressed in jeans and t-shirt covering his face with a handkerchief, Mathur said, adding, he later dressed himself as the pillion rider and drove in the city on a motorcyle along with his PRO.
He said the control room issued the information about the loot 20 minutes late and even then no policeman was seen when he reached the Rave three mall, the place where the incident was supposed to have taken place, he said.
No check posts could be seen even when he crossed six police stations in the city, Mathur added.
The SSP said that he came across one police check post but he wasn't stopped at the same despite him matching the robber's description.
He then called an immediate meeting of all police officials and slammed them for carelessness. Eight of those on duty were sent to 'line hazir' while SOs of the six police stations were issued a strict warning.
Mathur said he would now carry out such inspections at night to review the alertness of the police and added that he has ordered a probe as to why the control room broadcast information about the loot 20 minutes late.
