Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender today said his ministry is taking concrete steps to ensure that steel used in India is environment-friendly and do not cause any harm to people.
The minister was speaking at an event coordinated by MyGov here, Steel Ministry said in a statement.
"Singh spoke briefly about India's rapid rise in the world steel scenario, policies rolled out by the Ministry and various projects of national importance where steel has been used. He also pointed out the Ministry is taking concrete actions to ensure that steel used in India is cleaner, safer and healthier for every Indian," it said.
Under the National Steel Policy (NSP), the government has set a production target of 300 million tonnes, which is to be achieved by 2030-31. The NSP also aims at more than doubling the per capita steel consumption to 158 kg by 2030-31, from 61 kg at present.
Singh also informed the participants that India is now the second largest crude steel producing country.
The session was part of the ongoing 'Fridays At My Gov' series being coordinated by the government's citizen engagement platform MyGov, the ministry said.
