Seeking public cooperation in saving the Dal and Nigeen lakes from falling prey to encroachers, Lakes and Waterways Development Authority today said stern action would be taken against those raising illegal constructions by taking advantage of the unrest in the region.
"We will not allow the destruction of these water bodies and stern action will be taken against the elements who are misusing the prevailing situation to raise illegal constructions and indulge in encroachments," vice chairman of LAWDA Tehseen Mustafa said in a statement here.
He urged the people to come forth with information if they find any such illegal activity taking place in their respective areas.
"Unfortunately, some unscrupulous elements taking advantage of the prevailing law and order situation had started raising illegal constructions in and around the Lakes.
Besides raising illegal constructions in the prohibited area around these lakes, some persons had even started encroachments within these water bodies by way of fresh earth filling," he said.
Mustafa said after receiving reports about these illegal constructions and encroachments, the Enforcement Wing of LAWDA immediately swung into action and launched a demolition drive in and around the Lakes.
"Already scores of such encroachments have been removed and the drive will continue with full intensity," he said.
Meanwhile, continuing its demolition drive, the Enforcement Wing of LAWDA today dismantled several illegal constructions at Lashkari Mohalla and Baghwanpora, Nageen.
LAWDA has warned truck and load carrier owners not to carry or ferry any sort of construction material in the prohibited area of the Dal and Nageen Lakes, an official spokesman said.
