A 30 metre long stretch of National Highway 117 caved in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, leaving several vehicles stranded on the key road, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday night but no casualty has been reported so far, police said.

"About 30 metre stretch on NH 117 between Diamond Harbour and Kakdeep towns caved in near Jettyghat," police said.

The traffic towards Kakdeep, Namkhana and Sagar has been diverted from Sirakol via Usti.

Restoration work is underway and earthmovers have been pressed into service to repair the damaged road, district officials said.

"The reason for subsidence has not been ascertained yet," they said.

Trinamool Congress MLA for Diamond Harbour, Dipak Kumar Halder said, "Work for beautification of Hooghly river bank is underway which is adjacent to the subsidence site. We will inform the state government to take adequate measures.
