Even as the race was flagged-off by state Local Administration Minister S P Velumani, a large number of students arrived at Codisia Grounds, venue of Rekla race, and staged a sit-in at the premises.
They raised slogans seeking a permanent solution for holding Jallikattu.
The students said they will "allow the race" to be held only after what they called a "permanent solution" was in sight.
Velumani and other senior officials tried to pacify them stating that the ordinance, which was promulgated yesterday, will be replaced by an Act of legislature.
However, the protesters have refused to budge and are continuing their protests.

Speaking to reporters, Velumani said some vested
interests were trying to create confusion among the students about the ordinance.
The Chief Minister has already made it clear that the ordinance was a permanent solution to Jallikkattu and act will be brought in soon, he said.
However, Velumani without naming any one, said some organisations were attempting to create unnecessary confusion among the protesting students and youths over the ordinance to derive mileage out of it.
