The family members of a sub- inspector today demanded thorough investigation by independent agencies - CID or CBI into the alleged 'mysterious death' of the police officer, who police claimed to have shot himself after detaining several illegal coal trucks in Ri Bhoi district, officials said.
The family members have lodged a complaint with the Nongpoh police station into the tragic death of Marbaniang under suspicious circumstances, a senior police officer told PTI here.
Sub-inspector Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang, posted as officer-in-charge of Patharkhmah outpost in Ri Bhoi District, was found critically injured with a gunshot on his head in his official quarter on January 24.
According to police, Marbaniang had allegedly shot himself with his service revolver.
Marbaniang had detained over 30 trucks which carried coal illegally to Assam via Mairang-Azara road, hours before his death.
In the complaint, the family has sought for immediate investigation into the incident to ascertain the actual cause of his death.
"At the same time, they also urged the authorities concern to institute an inquiry by independent agencies like the Crime Investigation Department (CID) or Crime Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the case," the police said.
The cop's wife Chaleth Pyngrope had stated, "We as family members will never accept that he could take such a drastic decision to end his life."
Earlier, the Civil Society Women's Organization (CSWO) has also demanded the state government to institute an inquiry by the CBI into the case.
In a memorandum submitted to the Home Minister Roshan Warjri, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing alleged, "We highly suspect that he (Marbaniang) was murdered and such pressure and killing would put to threat many honest officers who are willing to uphold the law of the land.
