Successful disaster management was an outcome of the dedication and commitment of volunteers who provided humanitarian assistance, a member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said today.
Addressing a gathering of school students on the occasion of International Volunteer Day (IVD), Kamal Kishore, member, NDMA, told tech-savvy volunteers to leverage their newly- acquired skills to find solutions to the real world problems.
"Successful management of disasters across the world is mainly an outcome of the dedication and commitment of the volunteers, apart from the contribution of government bodies and scientific institutions," Kishore said.
The event was organised by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, along with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
UNDP Resident Representative in India Yuri Afanasiev said over a billion people across the world were volunteering to offer humanitarian assistance during natural disasters and calamities.
"Younger people are giving resurgence to the movement. Out of the 7,000 official UN volunteers, 100 are based out of India alone which is a big number," Afanasiev said.
Joint Secretary of Ministry of Youth and Sports Asit Singh said volunteering was a part of the Indian lifestyle and that volunteers were making a "whole-hearted contribution" to the country.
On the occasion, Indian cricketer Suresh Raina also addressed the students.
