Peace is not just absence of violence, but also justice, security and sanitation, Sulabh International founder and social worker Bindeshwar Pathak said here today.
Pathak also emphasised on "emancipation of those who occupy the lowest rung of the caste hierarchy," while accepting the 'Goyal Peace Prize' at a function organised by Kurukshetra University here.
"We all have a collective responsibility to erect a world in which improved sanitation, basic amenities and safe drinking water are available to all," he said.
Continuing further, he said, "Our primary goal should be to emancipate those who occupy the lowest rung of the caste hierarchy. Emancipation of the most marginalised is perhaps the most challenging task; it requires a major social churning and change".
He is the first recipient of Goyal Peace Prize instituted by the university in 2014.
The Goyal Prize for Physical Sciences was given to Dr T Padamnabhan of Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics.
"I appreciate the philanthropic spirit of Ram S Goyal who was a naturalised American but gave away half of his wealth to institute the Goyal Prizes at KU three decades back. India needs such philanthropy in the field of education and social reforms," Dr Padamnabhan said.
