Sultry in north; UP rivers in spate after heavy rains

Sultry conditions fed by light rains and high temperature troubled residents in northern and eastern states even as heavy pre-monsoon rains led to a rise in water levels in majors rivers of Uttar Pradesh.
Delhi's wait for rains on a cloudy day continued even as high temperature and humidity, measured between 49 and 79 per cent, caused discomfort to the people of the city, which is likely to be hit by the southwest monsoon on June 29.
The maximum temperature in the national capital was recorded at 39.6 and the minimum settled at 30 degrees Celsius.
The other three metropolitan cities of Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai recorded their maximum at 33.4, 32.4 and 28.7 degrees Celsius.
Moderate to heavy rains hit parts of Uttar Pradesh, leading to a rise in water levels in major rivers. Moradabad got 45.8 mm of rains, Mohana in Jaunpur 18 mm, Sitapur 12.4 mm, Lucknow 44.2 mm, Barabanki 57.2 mm and Shravasti 36 mm of rainfall.
While the water level in the Ganga is rising in Fatehgarh, Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat and Mirzapur, Yamuna is rising in Mohna and Banda. The Gomti is rising in Lucknow, while Sharda is flowing above danger mark in Palliakalan (Kheri) and rising in Kheri, a Central Water Commission report said.
Parts of Rajasthan exprienced light rains but people continued to reel under heat wave conditions.
Light rains in parts of Bihar brought the mercury down by a few notches. Patna, Bhagalpur and Purnea got 1 to 5 cm of rainfall.
Humid conditions prevailed in West Bengal following rains in parts of the state.
In Punjab and Haryana, the maximum temperature hovered near normal level, but high humidity added to the discomfiture of to the residents.
Hisar was the hottest place in Haryana, recording the maximum at 39.2 degrees. In Punjab, Amritsar and Ludhiana recorded the maximum at 36.6 and 30.9 degrees, respectively.
