Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi today sought a CBI probe in the alleged medicine purchase scam saying that the Health department officials probing the matter cannot be expected to muster courage to question former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar in this connection.
"Any probe into multi-crore medicine purchase scam cannot be said to be fair without questioning Nitish Kumar who held the Health department then even as the senior health department officials investigating it cannot be expected to muster courage to question Kumar," he told reporters here.
Stating that the medicine purchase scam had taken place during Nitish's regime, Modi alleged that influential Health department official Sanjay Kumar, said to be close to Kumar, was a member of the technical evaluation committee and even presided over the said meeting at which proposal for medicines purchase was approved last year.
Quoting from chief secretary Anjani Kumar Singh's letter to him, he said that the "tainted" health department official was private secretary of the then chief minister between 2006 and 2008.
Under the circumstances when the former chief minister was himself under scanner in the multi-crore medicine purchase scam, no state government official or agency can probe the matter fairly and question him, said Modi, a former deputy chief minister, and pressed for a CBI probe in the matter.
He slammed Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi for giving a clean chit to all ex-health ministers in medicine purchase scam and questioned his wisdom to do so at the time the probe was not complete in the matter.
It baffles one and all as to why Manjhi is giving clean chit to all former health ministers, when many of them are demanding CBI probe in the matter so that truth could prevail, he said.
