An unidentified youth was today lynched by an angry mob here after he was allegedly caught stealing a mobile phone by locals, police said.
The incident took place at Somnathnagar in Navagam-Dindoli area here, said Dindoli police inspector K G Limbachiya, who rushed to the spot after learning about the matter.
Primary investigation by the police has showed that the youth was tied to an electric pole by locals who thrashed him with wooden logs.
"The identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained. Locals told us that three to four persons came in the area in the wee hours. Locals started chasing the thieves when one of them stole a mobile phone," said Limbachiya.
Though others managed to escape, the deceased was caught by the irate mob, said Limbachiya.
"After catching one of the thieves, residents tied him to an electric pole and mercilessly thrashed him using sticks and wooden logs, resulting in his death. We are yet to verify the facts told by locals," said Limbachiya.
The body has been sent for post-mortem and police has initiated the process to lodge an FIR in this case.
"We have started the process to lodge an FIR against unidentified locals for the murder of this youth. We are questioning some residents to get some more details and nab the culprits," added Limbachiya.
