The State Vigilance Commission (SVC) has detected embezzlement in the office of the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Resident Commissioner in Mumbai and ordered departmental probe and recovery of embezzled amount.
On a complaint received by SVC regarding large-scale embezzlement and misappropriation of funds in the J&K Joint Resident Commission Office in Mumbai, an enquiry was conducted through the Director Finance by the Commission, an SVC spokesman said.
The probe revealed misappropriation of Rs 4.55 lakh by Jawaid Ahmad Shah, the then Joint Resident Commissioner, the spokesman said.
The amount was drawn by the said officer as House Rent Allowances during the period between September, 2011 and November, 2014, though he was using a government guest house as his residence, he said.
It was also found that no proper accounting procedure has been followed to ensure recovery of rent from all those using government accommodation at the J&K Joint Resident Commission in Mumbai and no reconciliation of accounts has been carried out, the spokesman said.
Taking serious note of the charges of embezzlement and misappropriation against Shah and others, the Commission has directed for conduct of regular departmental action against the said officer besides, recovering of the embezzled amount after serving articles of charges to the officer.
The Secretary to the Government, Hospitality and Protocol Department has been directed to take necessary legal action, if warranted, after completion of regular departmental enquiry, the spokesman said.
The State Vigilance Commission has also directed the Department for immediate audit and inspection to be carried out at Joint Resident Commission Office Mumbai to ascertain any other cases of similar embezzlement, he said.
