Inaugurating the silver jubilee celebration of the Indian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics here, Singh said there have been several instances where new technologies were used by fundamentalists and anti-national organisations for subversive activities.
"Scientists will have to gear up to counter these elements," he said.
The Home Minister said Indian mathematicians from Vedic period have made significant contribution to mathematics, including by giving Zero and Decimal systems.
Delivering the key note address, renowned mathematician K R Sreenivasan said the conference will serve as a platform for young scientists and engineers to learn systematic developments in those areas of mathematics which are essential for proper understanding of challenging problems in modern times.
