Supporting Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi raising farmers' issue, senior NCP leader Tariq Anwar today asked the Narendra Modi government that instead of only making "empty announcements" it should waive off loan of farmers so that they are not forced to commit suicide.
"Narendra Modi government shall take lesson from UPA government that had waived off about Rs 70,000 crore loans of farmers and do the same so that farmers are not forced to commit suicide," Anwar, MP from Katihar, told PTI.
Anwar, who is the NCP National General Secretary, said instead of doing anything concrete for the farmers battling hard in view of series of natural calamities, the BJP-led NDA ministry at the Centre was only making "empty announcements."
"Something should be done on ground too," he said taking a potshots at the Narendra Modi government.
He supported Rahul Gandhi raising farmers issue in Parliament and than venting their woes through visit to Punjab and now Maharashtra.
"Rahul Gandhi is doing a good work and he needs to be encouraged for this," he said.
In Bihar in particular, the farmers were facing severe hardship due to March squall followed by tropical storm on late April 21 night and than earthquake that have resulted in widespread damage to their standing crops, the MP from Katihar, which has been hit hard by the storm, said.
"Ministers from Delhi are making aerial visits and then vanishing while farmers are dying and looking for some relief," the NCP leader said.
He made a case that recent destruction due to nature's fury in Bihar be declared as national calamity.
Anwar later left for Katihar to interact with troubled farmers and citizens of his constituency.
