Tata Motors sales slip by 36%, Bajaj's flat in April

Sales of the Nano, Indica, Indigo range settled at 5,653 units, lower by 37% over 8,918 units sold in the same month last year

Tata Motors, India's largest automotive company, reported its lowest monthly sales in at least a decade in April at 7,441 units. The company was pushed to the sixth spot and replaced by Toyota Kirloskar Motors in India's largest passenger vehicle maker rankings.

The Mumbai-based company, which had reported sales of 11,570 units during the same month last year, dragged the sector’s performance further down. The sector reported a dip of 7.8 per cent in the month, marking a subdued start to the financial year.

Sales of the Nano, Indica and Indigo range settled at 5,653 units, lower 37 per cent over 8,918 units sold in the same month last year. The Sumo, Safari, Aria and Venture range posted sales of 1,788 units, a drop of 33 per cent over 2,652 units sold in April last year.    

Further, sales of commercial vehicles slid 36 per cent in the month to 23,229 units from 36,025 vehicles last year.

Sales of Bajaj Auto, the second-largest two-wheeler manufacturer in India, reported 0.39 per cent drop in total two-wheeler sales (including exports) to 299,636 units in the month this year against 300,827 units a year ago.

Total sales of three-wheelers dropped 26 per cent to 31,893 units during the month compared to 43,351 units a year ago.
