Tata Trusts as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility today extended stipend and scholarship amounting to Rs 7.6 lakh to 80 students under the aegis of Sesoma Students' Welfare Trust (SSWBT).
The stipend and scholarship covering admission and tuition fees of the 80 students (Rs 9500 each) from different parts of the State for this year was handed over by Nagaland Governor, P B Acharya during the formal function at Raj Bhavan here.
"SSWBT was established by Sesoma clan of Khonoma village in Kohima district to promote elementary education to the deserving students in rural areas, especially the girl child who gets pressured to work at home or in the field rather than study, due to economic circumstances," said its Secretary K Seyie.
Though SSWBT had been helping students since the year 2000 from their own contribution, however, from 2016 they are now getting sponsorship from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust to provide the entire amount of stipend and scholarship to the students, he said.
Nagaland Governor P B Acharya lauding the efforts of SSWBT Khonoma in helping the rural students in the State, however, maintained that education has to be employable and not conventional.
Acharya said that empowerment through education should be to develop the skills in shaping a better state and nation thereby giving back to the society.
Maintaining that Nagaland is endowed with natural resources including petroleum and minerals, he called upon the young students to empower themselves with proper education so as to gain from the natural resources without involving in corruption and looting the society.
