West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said the dearth of new Rs 500 notes has led to a 'pitable' situation in tea gardens as workers were not able to receive their wages.
"Still no supply of Rs 500 from RBI. Only 500 ATMs in our state have been recalibrated for Rs 500. So long queues of people continuing, but not getting money. Pitiable condition in tea gardens," she said in a statement.
The chief minister said, "Of 287 tea gardens, 119 have not received wages since 29.10.16 affecting 2.5 lakh tea workers. Our cooperative sector suffers as there is a gap of Rs 1,261 crore which RBI has not yet given."
Continuing her tirade against Modi, Banerjee had vowed to fight till the end against the "anti-people" decision which, she claimed, had imposed an "undeclared financial emergency" in the country.
