Teachers' Association moves AHRC

The All Assam Government-aided ME School Teachers Association has moved the Assam Human Right Commission (AHRC) by filing a case against the state Education Department on the issue of teachers allegedly committing suicide for non-receipt of salary.
The case was filed for compensating the families of the teachers who committed suicide as the government failed to pay salary to these teachers for the last 15 to 20 years consecutively, said the Association's spokesperson Satya Nrayan Bharali here.
The Middle English School Teachers Association had moved the AHRC and also met its Chairperson Justice Dr Aftab H Saikia at his office in Guwahati for speedy disposal of the case to compensate the families of the concerned teachers, Bharali said.

Referring to a recent incident, the spokesperson said on September 25 a teacher from Morigaon in central Assam had committed suicide for not receiving his salary for the last 18 years and unable to afford his family's upkeep and his children's education fees.
The association accused the government of failing to give a thought to payment of the teachers' salary when it extended full financial support for construction of school buildings, library, boundary wall, toilets, etc.
The Association has also taken up a series of agitational programmes from October 2 at Gandhi Park in Guwahati to draw attention to their plight and threatened to resort to road blockades.

They also decided to submit a memorandum to the Governor on October 4 if the government failed to clear their stand on the future of the 1,700 government aided ME school teachers, the spokesperson added.
