Teachers call off protest after IAS officer's suspension

A teachers' association today called off its boycott of electoral rolls revision work after IAS officer Abhishek Singh, accused of treating a Dalit teacher in an "inhuman" manner, was suspended.
Singh, husband of Durga Shakti Nagpal whose suspension as SDM had triggered a controversy last year, was posted as the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Mahawan area of Mathura.
He was suspended yesterday by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav after allegations were levelled against him that he made Dalit teacher Fauran Singh do sit-ups as punishment for failing to complete the task assigned to him as the Booth Level Officer (BLO).

Agitated over the alleged incident, teachers here had submitted a petition to the District Magistrate demanding strict action against Singh and threatened to boycott electoral rolls revision work, which will begin on October 15.
"We would resume the second phase of the voter-list rechecking drive starting from October 15 as SDM Abhishek Singh has been suspended and attached to state headquarters for a fair enquiry," Ram Krishna Rawat, president of district unit of UP Primary Teachers Association, said.
