The suspect was held on his return to the UK from an undisclosed location on Friday.
The UK's South East Counter Terrorism Unit (SECTU) said his arrest was related to conflicts overseas.
"The man was arrested whilst returning to the UK. There was no imminent threat to the community or passengers at the time of the arrest. The arrest relates to conflicts overseas. There is no identified risk to the community or wider public," a statement issued by SECTU said.
The man was held on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 and has been bailed until February 27.
The man was detained in east London today by the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command.
Police said he was being held in custody at a south London police station and enquiries are continuing.
