According to an army spokesman, acting on specific information about the presence of three militants in Gunabadar village of Handwara, a joint team of police and army launched a search operation during the night.
Contact with the militants was established at 0645 hours, the spokesman said, adding that the militants had opened fire on the search party, inviting retaliation by them.
Army sources said that a terrorist has been killed in the exchange with the operation still continuing.
