"There is a need for serious introspection within the party about what went wrong. The communal BJP is trying to make inroads in Bengal. But the cultural heritage of Bengal is so strong that BJP can never create a strong foothold here.
"If you have to stop BJP, then Congress is the need of the hour because Congress only has the conviction to fight BJP," Bhunia said.
Congress failed to make any impact in the polls and was virtually reduced to a non-entity as it managed to secure only 29,000 votes in Bongaon and 4500 votes in Krishnaganj.
